+++ International Conference+++ TIME/LESS: Sensing, Planning, Designing in Complex Cities and Regions

22nd AESOP Planning & Complexity Thematic Meeting

28-29 November 2024, RWTH Aachen University

The international conference ‘TIME/LESS: Sensing, Planning, Designing in Complex Cities and Regions’ focuses on exploring the crucial but often overlooked role of time in shaping cities and their planning. It seeks to improve understanding of socio-spatial transformations by examining their timing, speed, sequence and impact. Over 35 papers, presented by researchers from different backgrounds, will explore innovative, time-sensitive methodologies in three key areas: Sensing, which explores how spatial rhythms and changes are captured through different perspectives and technologies; Planning, which addresses the challenges of developing time-aware policies and strategies that adapt to continuous change; and Design, which examines how design processes balance short-term solutions with long-term complexities. The event emphasises interdisciplinary approaches to empower urban planners, policymakers and designers to address contemporary urban challenges.

The following keynotes will stimulate the discussion:

(28.11, 9:00-10:30) Juval Portugali | Time travel, homo planner and the city

(28.11, 18:00-19:30) Filipa Matos Wunderlich | Temporal Urban Design: Temporality, Rhythm and Place

(29.11, 9:00-10:30) Yodan Rofé | Time and Timelessness in Alexander’s Search for Beauty
