Stefano Cozzolino (Bergamo, Italy) is Senior Researcher at ILS – Research Institute for Regional and Urban Development (Department of spatial planning and urban design) and lecturer at RWTH Aachen University (Germany). He gained the doctorate title in 2017 at the Polytechnic University of Milan, where he worked from 2013 to 2018, with a thesis titled “The city as action. The dialectic between rules and spontaneity”. Stefano Cozzolino has various international experiences. Among them are worth mentioning the ones at the Purchase College (State University of New York) and that at the University of Groningen (The Netherlands). 

His main research interest focuses on the interplay between planning/design and the evolution of spontaneous social-spatial configurations. He has diverse peer-reviewed publications on international journals (e.g. Environment and Planning B, Land-Use Policy, the Journal of Urban Design, CITIES, Cosmos and Taxis and others) which deal with issues like urban complexity, self-organization, adaptability of the built-environment and property rights.

He is chair of the AESOP Thematic group on Ethics, Values and Planning. Beside the academic field, he has several experiences in urban design projects, participatory community processes and land-use planning.
